Follow your interests by focusing on writing prose, plays, or poetry and publishing your work in our student anthology. The English Language side of the degree explores how language shapes identities and societies and is designed to provide specific tools for your own writing, giving you the power to re-shape self and society. You can also take English Literature modules to gain a deep understanding of a range of genres such as crime fiction, travel writing, postcolonial writing, and modern drama.
Study style
The course is assessed entirely by coursework and taught in interactive seminars, lectures and writing workshops – taught in small groups by published academics and professional authors. In lectures and seminars you'll gain a detailed understanding of linguistic and literary techniques behind great writing. In workshops you'll work with staff and other students to develop your own stories, plays, novels and poems.
As one of our writers, you'll also have the opportunity to work closely with professionals from the Everyman Theatre, and see your work performed by actors in a staged reading. We're a close-knit community and our students benefit from a high level of support, with one-to-one tutorials always available. Professors Arran Stibbe and Nigel McLoughlin have both received the top National Teaching Fellowship award for teaching excellence.

96 – 112 UCAS tariff points, CCC – BBC at A levels, MMM – DMM at BTEC or a Merit in your T-Level.
If you are using a combination of qualifications to achieve the required UCAS tariff points, they must either include at least 2 A levels, a BTEC or an equivalent qualification.

This course is available with an integrated foundation year to help you prepare. A degree with an integrated foundation year starts your studies with a year spent learning the skills required to progress onto a full honours degree. You will develop valuable study skills, communication, team work and problem-solving techniques which help to build your confidence and prepare you for the rest of your course.

Cheltenham is home to The Times & The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival. You can get involved in a number of activities around the event. Students have performed their work, interviewed contributors, reviewed events and been volunteers. There's also the renowned Poetry Festival which offers internships to students to help organise the festival and perform their poetry.
In your final year, you can learn about the publishing industry and how to submit your work to professional magazines and markets. Uniquely, this course includes optional practical communication modules where you can gain leadership skills in inspirational speaking, persuasive writing, active listening, visual design and ethical argumentation. These skills will provide a foundation for life and employment.

Cheltenham is a centre of creativity and home to around 50 festivals a year. These include the world-renowned Cheltenham Literature Festival and Poetry Festival – where you'll have opportunities to perform your work.
Take part in practical workshops
Hone your speaking and writing skills through taking part in a wide range of practical workshops such as storytelling, voice training, presentation skills, comedy improvisation, nature poetry writing or parachute teamwork games.
