Diet Dr. Pepper and Pepsi Max stay pretty close to home

Agreed, Diet Dr. Pepper is wonderful. I honestly prefer diet Coke to the regular, but it has to have a squeeze of lemon juice

That and the brain altering aspartame that tricks peoples brains into thinking they are eating/drinking something very sweet.

I like Diet A&W, but the ones that are closest (IMHO) to the original tastes are some of the newer ones that aren't called "Diet" whatever.
Coke Zero, Pibb Zero, and Pepsi Max are all really good examples of these.

Diet Mountain Dew in a plastic bottle, or even better, from a fountain. Hand down the best IMO.

I've tried Diet Mountain Dew on more than one occasion, hoping each time that it won't be as awful as the last, but I just can't get there. It's like stale soda water. That said, glad you like it.

I drink a lot of Diet Mountain Dew, but does it taste like the original? No. And that's fine because I hate regular Mtn Dew.
Diet Sunkist tastes most like regular but the lack of sugar changes the mouthfeel of a soda. I don't think it'll ever taste the same, just ok as it's own thing.

Fountain? Really? I think that's the worst place to try any soda ever. Notable exception for being a kid and making mix concoctions.

Diet Sunkist. Also, Sunkist has caffeine even though it's an orange drink- the same amount of caffeine as coke/pepsi- which I learned on TIL a while back.

Definitely Diet Doctor Pepper
If you're having trouble switching to diet try to mix 50/50 when you get a fountain drink and slowly lower the amount of regular.

I have never tried a diet soda that wasn't terrible.

If you drink nothing but diet sodas you won't notice the flavor difference after a fairly short amount of time. Personally I prefer to drink pop on rare occasion and drink the real stuff when I do.

Diabetic here. I can taste regular soda a mile away. It's not as sweet-tasting as diet soda. When I tasted Coke Zero, I hated it. It tasted like someone served me regular coke over diet coke.

I bought one when they first came out. Took one sip and threw it in the trash. It tasted like a chemical dump.

Diet Sunkist Lemonade is even better tasting than the regular, and I don't like any other diet soda.

Pibb Zero, Diet Dr Pepper, Diet A&W Rootbeer and Creme Soda. Coke Zero and its derivatives are pretty good as well. Pepsi Max is alright but I don't really care for Pepsi in general. Diet Coke/Pepsi always taste like the can to me, despite the Max/Zero versions probably being almost identical formulation.
